UPCs and PLUs are distinct to every item in FieldStack and trigger sales, receiving, and sends of the specific item. The primary UPC entered on an item appears on reports, marketplace orders, picklists, and other places with FieldStack.
All items begin with a UPC or GTIN. These could come from a vendor file, bulk item load, or can be generated on items when they are created if no UPC is inputted. At times it is necessary to add a new UPC to an item.
If a manufacturer assigns a new barcode to an existing product or if you want to assign a Product Lookup (PLU) code to an item, you can do so by adding in a new reference code. Reference codes must be unique in the system and must be numeric. Typing a reference code into the Point of Sale search will return the single item mapped to the code.
Steps to add a reference code:
1. Look up the item by pasting the current UPC in the search box followed by the Enter key.
2. Double-click on the result to bring up the item edit screen.
3. Once on the item edit screen click the Reference Codes: Edit button:
Enter in the new UPC or Product Lookup Code (PLU) and click Add New.
If it's a valid UPC and it's the UPC that should go on outbound orders, pick lists, and upstocking lists, click Set Primary UPC.
Click OK and then Save on the overall edit screen.
If you need to delete an existing placeholder GTIN or non valid UPC, you can do so while in this form.
If previous UPCs were valid and would appear on the item, do not delete them in case stock with that UPC exists in stores.
Note: PLUs
PLUs are generally 4 digit number strings that are created by a supplier or are managed internally. You can input a random short number on a non-UPCed item (like a weight based bulk good, a service, bag charge etc.) The FieldStack generated GTIN starting with 002 should remain on the item. Either will bring the item up in the POS.
On office search tabs, the PLU only works in searches when entered in the UPC or UPC listing fields.
Note: Merging Items
If the UPC you enter is already attached to another product, it will ask you if you want to merge that item into this one. By merging, it will pull inventory and sales history of the other item into this item and mark the other item as unsearchable.See here for a more specific detailed tutorial:
