Managing Web store Text (String) Resources

Modified on Wed, 27 Dec, 2023 at 11:31 AM

Many of the text fields on your web store can be altered within the FieldStack application without directly altering the code.

Implementation of Locale String Resources

These text fields are referred to as "Locale String Resources" and are used throughout the Webstore to supply text to a variety of elements of a given page.  To get a sense of where these resources are used, webstore administrators can toggle a view from the WebStore Administration page to display resource names rather than their values.

As an example, a page header that includes a searchbar, area with account information, and cart, utilizes Locale String Resources to generate its text.  With the LocaleStringResource View enabled, the particular resources that comprise this component of the page are revealed. These are fields that you can alter to phrasing that fits your brand and style. For example you might want to change "Search" to "Find your dreams!" or change "Saved for Later" to "My Shopping List."

Managing String Resources in FieldStack

To edit the available text fields on your web store, go to Marketplaces > Edit Text Resources.

The editor contains a complete list of text resources used in the web store, as well as search and filter capabilities.

The search bar not only scans setting names, but also looks though values - this is a useful tool for finding settings that may include company language or relate directly to a certain aspect of the Webstore, as well as for finding specific resources and their values that are visible in the Local String Resources View.

The filter allows for broader distillations of these settings.

A string resource's value can be edited by selecting its row and clicking the Edit Value button in the bottom-right corner of the window, or by simply double-clicking anywhere on the row.  Edits can be made from the pop-up window.

Although rare, some resources utilize formatted strings which contain placeholder variables that populate from another source.  These settings' rows contain variables in curly brackets in the rightmost column that are integral components of the resource's values.

Upon launching the editor, these variables, or specifiers, will be listed alongside the space to edit the value to which they are attached.

Attempts to save values that do not include all of the listed specifiers or contain additional, undefined specifiers will throw errors.

After making desired changes to one or more resources, these changes must be published by clicking the Publish Changes button on the lower-left side of the editor.  This button will also display the number of resources that have been changed during the current editing session.

An attempt to close the editor without publishing changes will prompt a confirmation popup to prevent accidental loss of work.

Upon publishing changes, it will be necessary to flush the Webstore cache for new values to display properly.  This can be done from the WebStore Administration menu.
