1. Product Variants & Attribute Type/Value - Initial Setup

Modified on Wed, 20 Dec 2023 at 09:44 AM

This article reviews the process of initial setup of product variants and attribute types/values in FieldStack.

Overview:

The concept of Product Variants and Attribute Types/Attribute Values is being introduced into FieldStack as part of the 2017 Marketplace Refresh.  The end result is a self-service method for controlling:

  • If and how individual Item Codes (UPC/Multiple Mapped UPCs) and their variants are grouped together on automatically consolidated webstore product pages
  • Filtering and selection options displayed to the end user on webstore product pages

Step 1:  Edit the Product Attribute Types and Values at a global level

Before assigning attribute types at the item level, launch the 'Attribute Management' panel to set up attributes globally.  Any changes made in this panel will be applied globally.

In the grid that comes up you will see a list of Attribute Types. Each Attribute Type refers to a different detail that can be assigned to an item or group of items and can be a descriptor, a system defined category, online filterable or pivotable product information, a trigger for online visibility, a trigger to show extra info about the item, special pricing functions or html code.

There are three variations of attributes types:

  • Unique: Specifies whether or not to enforce one value per item (if checked, only one value can be used per item - e.g. you may have color defined as 'unique' which would mean you could add an attribute value of Green or Red, but not both.)
  • Filter: If checked, attribute values of this type will show up as search filter on webstore. Filters allow customers to reduce the results shown by selecting attributes that are customer-facing.
  • Pivot: If checked, attribute values of this type will be eligible for pivoting within a product variant page (sizes, weights, etc)

To edit attribute values, select the Attribute Values tab, then select an Attribute Type in the drop down menu.

  • To add a value click Add Value.
  • To edit an existing value click Edit Value.
  • The Internal Description is what you will see when assigning the attribute value. The Text Value is what the customer will see if the attribute appears online.
  • To assign the order in which on online filter might show to a customer, assign a Decimal Value. This will determine the order in which the Attributes are displayed.
  • Text values will most often be used

Step 2:  Edit the Product Attribute Values at an item level

  1. Search for an item or group of items using Find Item (Advanced), searching by keyword, manufacturer name, vendor, or product source group.
  2. Right-click on the item and select Add Item Attribute
    1. Multi-select items (using Shift + Click or CTRL + Click) and right-click to assign an attribute to multipe items at once
  3. Select desired Type and Attribute Value ('add new value' if necessary)
  4. Save changes
