Use a coupon to take $5 off a specific item. You can create variations of this sale to discount an item by using different discount amounts and item details.
Create a coupon in the promotion of your choice.
Coupon Settings

Coupon Code | Choose the coupon code |
Coupon Name | Choose the name of the coupon (this is customer facing and will be displayed at checkout) |
Coupon Description | Choose the coupon description (this is customer facing and will be displayed at checkout) |

Seller / Manufacturer | Choose seller if this is an internal coupon or manufacturer if it is external |
Taxable | Check to charge tax on the discounted amount |
Autoapply | Check to make the coupon apply automatically, don't check for the coupon to be manually applied |

Items
Add the quantity get. For the discount to apply to one of the eligible items, the quantity get should be 1.

Add Get items that the coupon will apply to.
Example: items (added by UPC)
Note: you could use different item criteria to change the eligible items, for example adding a variety of items by attribute.
Bottom of Form Settings
Choose the store group and set the start and end dates for when the coupon will be available.

Stores | The store group where the coupon will be eligible |
Start / End Date | The time frame the coupon will be available |
Note: the store group will depend on whether the sale is instore only, online only, or both instore and online. Choose the corresponding store group for either stores, the webstore, or both (all).
